Andrea Belanger & THE BLIND WOODS: DEBUT EP |... →
When I first saw a very young Andrea Belanger (@hardtravel) open for @thewoodbrothers in Fall River, MA four years ago, she stole the show. I was immediately smitten by her poetic lyrics and raw, gorgeous voice.
I’m happy to have the chance to support her latest endeavor and am already scheming about where to host a house concert.
Check her out, yo.

This woman’s work stirs my soul. Her music centers on “place and belonging,” something I think we all silently study and hope for, no matter where we are.

I typically prefer my bluegrass+ sans percussion, brass, etc., but the @Rubblebucket horns in this @stringdusters set from @TheFestyXP are downright delicious. Perfectly complimentary to the tunes and stringed instruments.

This story on NPR brought tears to my eyes last night. How many poor, cross-eyed country boys can say they invented a musical genre that has influenced and inspired generations?
Thanks, Big Mon. Happy Birthday.

Listening now: new Joy Kills Sorrow, another virtuoso string band from the Northeast in the tradition of Crooked Still. Like that band, they are led by the outrageously gorgeous voice of a lead singer (Aoife O’Donovan for the former, Emma Beaton for the latter), and she is surrounded by tremendously talented and unique musicians providing the perfect melodies and harmonies.

Last night I had a dream I went back to college for another senior year, and they sent me and my roommates on a “retreat” that was actually the John Hartford Memorial Festival in Bean Blossom, IN.
I spent the weekend with @timobrien, @campgreensky, @stringdusters, @wildknees, and @LarryKeel…and never went back to school.

One year ago I was settling in for a fantastic weekend of music at DelFest in western Maryland. Today, I am torturing myself by following along with the twitter stream and trying not to think about all the magic I’m missing.
Somebody get me to a festival, STAT!

Why is it that people feel entitled to free music? These folks should be forced to spend an evening hanging with hard-working, extensively-touring, independent musicians, then have to tell them to their face that they’re going home to steal their work.
Do these same folks feel entitled to free visual art? Where is the disconnect?

Just bought tickets to see Josh Ritter at the House of Blues in Boston Valentine’s Day weekend. It is possible that the only way I could have too much of Josh and his music would be if the man himself were forcibly stuffed down my esophagus. Even then, YUM.

Mumfords opener part deux: Cadillac Sky. Kind of a Mumford/Avett hybrid. It’s rare that an opener gets the crowd as riled up as the HOB Boston was during their set. They definitely set the tone for the energy in that room last night.
Prog-bluegrassy but definitely have some old-time and country vibes - check out this archive.org set from Austin earlier this year.

Something to Remember
This poem landed in my inbox this morning via a friend that I was talking to recently about wanting. I think some degree of wanting can be healthy if it pushes you toward positive change, but it should never overshadow appreciation for what you have.

Way to go, Ed. I’m happy to see that someone is tackling this oft-forgotten subject. Having a best friend who was severely affected by an accident at an amusement park, this hits close to home. I never liked “thrill rides” much at all growing up. Part of it was my propensity for motion sickness, but in general I didn’t get the idea of such fabricated adrenaline...
